A placeholder is used when you are not able to assign a staff member to a shift OR you are using work assignments and want to ensure you don't lose your work assignments if you have to delete an employee from a shift.

If you have not set the placeholder preference on your schedule type which automatically adds a placeholder to each shift assignment you can add placeholders manually.  All shift assignments that have been created with a placeholder show in green.

1.  Click on Manage Schedules

2.  Click on Schedules or access your schedule from the Manager's dashboard under Your Current Schedules.

3.  Choose the VSB icon for the schedule you want to open

4.  Click on the shift to highlight it

5.  From your Staff Pick List click the role to add

6.  From the drop down box double click the role name which appears in green to add a placeholder to this shift

7.  You can now either add a person to the shift which replaces the placeholder OR leave it as a placeholder and when the schedule is published it becomes an open shift on your shift board ready for pick up

Note:  You can add as many lifeguard placeholders as you want.  The number below the lifeguard will increment by one each time you add a lifeguard.  If you decide to fill one of these placeholder positions simply click on the shift and add the staff assignment.  The staff member will show up in green and will decrement the number by one if there was more than one Lifeguard placeholder listed.  Once you've published your schedule these placeholder shifts will be posted as open shifts to the shift board.  Staff can then start the process of picking up these shifts.
